Can you adopt a baby sloth? Adopting a baby sloth, in the way, we’ll be talking about here, is similar to some of the programs that ask you to sponsor a child in another country.

Your contribution to the baby sloth for adoption goes to help with food, shelter, medicines, medical care, rehabilitation, conservation efforts, and education.
So, in a way, you contribute to offsetting the expenses of the care of your favorite animal The Sloth, you’re helping to support it.
So, even though the sloth doesn’t belong to you or live with you, you’re making a big difference in its life, since the cost of upkeep can be very high and difficult for many places to afford easily.
Your donation can even help provide the veterinary care necessary to save a sloth’s life that has been injured or is ill.

There’s going to be a sloth with your name on it, figuratively. So, how do you go about adopting the sloth?
There are several places that let you adopt a cute sloth. Some of them are sanctuaries or agencies engaged in conservation efforts and others are zoos.
Obviously, with a zoo, you could go to see your new baby sloth for adoption. In rare cases, you might be able to see the sloth at the sanctuary, but that really is rare.
The sloth that lives at the sanctuaries is most often released back into the wild when they’re able to live on their own again.
Either as grown sloths in the case of orphans or completely recovered in the case of injured or ill sloths at the sanctuary or institute.
This is why this whole process is a symbolic sloth adoption. You contact the agency you wish to work with, most often through the internet, and sign up to adopt your very first sloth.
Sometimes you can pick the sloth you want to adopt and the money you donate will go directly to that sloth’s care.
In other cases, you pick a sloth and your donation is done in its name.
That sloth or others will benefit, whoever needs it more, or the money will go to general upkeep, maintenance, procurement of supplies or conservation efforts, and education.
You can adopt a three-toed sloth or a two-toed depending on your preference.
How Much Does Adopting a Sloth Cost?
What does it cost to adopt a sloth? Well, that varies. Sometimes it’s as low as $25 or as high as several hundred dollars.
Some of them even have an annual membership that you can renew if you wish.
So your donation most likely is combined with other donation/adoption efforts to meet the sloth’s needs.
Once you’ve sent your adoption money, many places will send you a certificate of adoption kit.
This basically consists of a sloth adoption certificate stating that you are the adopter of a fine sloth by the name of Slowpoke or whatever its name is.
Sometimes the adoption kit will include other gifts, such as fact sheets, photos, access to videos, and chat times with the keepers or a plush animal, plus many other gifts.
Of course, you’re going to want to research whichever organization you go with.

Organizations Offering Sloth Adoption Programs
We took the time to do some extensive research into the question of sloth adoption. We wanted to know where and where you could adopt a cute sloth.
This isn’t meant to replace your own research or as an endorsement of any programs listed below.
Here are a few examples of sloth adoption programs that we found while doing our own research on the topic.
The Toucan Rescue Ranch
This is an organization that specializes in rescues, as its name implies.
Sloths could be harmed by electrical wires, trafficking, dog attacks, being hit by cars, and similar other causes.
The Ranch rehabilitates them and returns them to the wild.
Adoptions are part of their Saving Sloths Together program and the money will care for a baby sloth for adoption for about three months.
You’ll receive a certificate, bookmarks, information sheet, desktop background, and screensaver.
You can adopt either a two-toed or a three-toed sloth so you have a choice.

The Sloth Institute Adopting a Sloth Program
This is another institute in Costa Rica. You can apply for a sloth adoption and the money goes to help injured sloths and to help “Sloths in Training”, in other words, orphaned sloths, to learn to live in the wild.
An additional program is one that tracks released sloths to learn more about how they live and what they need us to do to coexist with them safely.
Also, sloth speedways are built over busy thoroughfares using ropes slung across from one side to the other, tree to tree.
The sloth can cross over the ropes and avoid the highway and cars below.
If you do a Hero Sloth adoption, you’ll receive a certificate and can watch your sloth via Skype while talking with the sloth’s keeper.
You can’t talk to the sloth, however, as the sloths are sensitive to outside sounds, so only the expert will be able to hear what you are saying.
This institute works with The Toucan Rescue center in a combined effort to help meet these sloth’s needs.

World Animal Foundation
Looking at the Foundation’s Website, it seemed to be only about adoptions and donations.
For me, I like to know what an organization is doing with the money and that wasn’t apparent to me while I browsed their pages.
There was some talk about rescues, education, research, and investigations, but not much.
It does state that they’ll send you a sloth adoption certificate, photos, fact sheet, info cards, and that it can be given as a gift.
To look for yourself you can visit their website perhaps you’ll find something I didn’t.

You can adopt a two or three-toed sloth at the Fund in the adopt a sloth program.
The adoption of a sloth doesn’t support one particular sloth or tell you its name, but instead, the adoption money goes to help the general conservation efforts of the fund.
The baby sloth for adoption WWF program will send you a gift kit that can include a certificate of sloth adoption, fact sheet, info cards, and plush toys depending on the level you adopt at.
This one is one of the higher-priced adoption packages, but the organization is well known.
It’s been around for about 60 years and has a reputation for making a difference in various countries in environmental conservation.
Baby sloth for adoption program WWF works in about 100 countries helping people coexist with wildlife and reduce their “carbon footprint” in their everyday lives.
It works with people to provide better and more sustainable food production, maintain clean water sources, promote energy that is renewable, preserve forests and oceans, and protect wildlife, such as our lethargic friends.

Jaguar Research Center
Weren’t we looking at sloths here? Yes, we were, but the Jaguar Research Center also helps other animals besides jaguars.
One of those is the sloth. It’s a center located at Playa Chiquita, Limon, Costa Rica.
The money you send helps them care for animals that were hurt by humans who were hunting or engaging in animal trafficking.
Injured animals and orphaned babies who need to learn how to live in the wild require veterinary and medical care, food, and enclosures, plus a staff who can train them to live on their own later.
When you send your donation, you’ll receive a certificate with your name or the name of the person you are giving the adoption to and a background story with pictures.

The National Wildlife Federation
You can adopt a three-toed sloth symbolically through the National Wildlife Federation.
It’s another organization that is better known. With each adoption, they plant a tree in cooperation with schools, governments, and nonprofits within the united states.
Those trees will be native to the area in which they’re planted and will enhance the environment for wildlife and other flora and fauna.
You’ll receive an adoption kit that could contain a certificate, poster, plush animal, calendar, or magnet, depending on the package you order.
The site doesn’t specifically say what the adoption will go for, but a look at their site shows all of the activities that they engage in to benefit animals.
Some of that work involves maintaining healthy habitats for animals to live in, recovering species that are dwindling, and conservation efforts for animals that are endangered.
Combatting climate change, and introducing farming, grazing, and forestry techniques that will enable those industries to remain productive while simultaneously protecting the wildlife and their environment.

The Sloth Conservation Foundation
The last sloth adopting organization we’ll look at is The Sloth Conservation Foundation.
They’ll send you a sloth adoption kit, either by email or regular mail that will include a sloth certificate of adoption, a biography, and photo of your sloth, and the book “Sloths: Life in the Slow Lane”. The book is sent by regular mail only.
This foundation is big on conservation and education.
They work with different conservationists, researchers, and other experts around the world.
Combine they coordinate all of their work into one central source, making the information available to anyone who needs it.
Educating the local populations on how to live near to wildlife in the least disturbing way is also high on their list of priorities.
Informing people of the dangers of mishandling or removing sloths from their homes helps to discourage trafficking.
Power lines are insulated, making them less likely to electrocute an animal, and trees are replanted, especially close to highways.
Canopy bridges made out of rope or more durable materials can be built from one tree across to another on the opposite side of busy roadways.
This provides ways for sloths, monkeys, and other animals to cross to the other side safely.
